Rogers City Council
Contact city council representatives and ask them to vote to not build the proposed road between S Horsebarn Road and S Dodson Street.
Points you can draw from in conversation with city council representatives
- There has never been a road between S Horsebarn Road and S Dodson Street.
- The Trail of Two Cities was just built and opened in December of 2017. It is a small gem of a green space in the heart of Rogers / Bentonville. Hundreds of walkers, runners, and bicyclists use and enjoy the trail every day.
- Neighboring businesses (apartment complexes and hotels) refer residents and visitors to this segment of path because it is a rare sanctuary from city hustle and bustle – it is part of their business model. Residents from across the NWA region travel to Rogers to walk and jog on that section of the trail.
- Road construction would destroy a wildlife habitat (deer, eagles, hawks, cranes, ducks, geese, and black squirrels); cause air, noise, and light pollution; and degrade the Trail of Two Cities.
- S Horsebarn Road could be improved between 52nd Street and Metro Park Crossing to handle the increased traffic associated with the LISA Academy. Rogers could improve existing roads and add sudewalks and bike paths to enhance overall mobility instead of prioritizing car traffic over residents. Bentonville could improve existing streets to ease congestion on Walton Blvd.
- We understand this road is intended to pull traffic off of the Walton Blvd commercial thoroughfare in Bentonville. ArDOT says 40,000 cars per day used this section of Walton Blvd in 2019. If only 10% of those cars use the new road, 4,000 cars per day would speed through our residential neighborhood, just south of a new charter school.
- This steady stream of speeding cut-through traffic would endanger school children and trail users, kill wildlife, and remove a loved green space.
- The road would bisect Horsebarn Rd and the Razorback Trail, reducing north-south mobility for area residents.
- When we voted on the 2018 City Bond, we had no idea that the City planned to build a new road to extend Oak Street west of 52nd Street. The City called this section of the road the "W Oak Street Extensio - Phase 3". Oak Street does not exist on the west side of I-49.
- The City has spent some money on road design, but not on construction. It's not too late to stop this road.
