Ares: the Greek God of War. Or... the amazing large lanky teenage dog who loves to play. Ares has a remarkably quick bond, especially to children. He remains aware at all times of the family, especially where my daughter is and her well being and is cautious not to knock her over, even when chasing our other GSD around and around the living room! Ares has no aggression with food, toys or inappropriate handling. He wants to be close to you, but not on top of you, or even touching you. He is completely content to be laying at your side, as he is right now as I write this. Ares is incredibly intelligent, but has a stubborn streak and needs reminding of his former training (his former owner was deployed and his wife could not keep up with his training, she simply did not know how to) but is quick to remember. In just two days, he has learned to walk much better on a leash, stay, lay down, come and a whistle calls him off of anything (except barking, but he settles pretty quickly...though his bark will STOP anyone in their tracks.) The sit command has proven to be where he is most stubborn. He simply pretends he does not hear you sometimes. Just keep at it and he will sit and look to you for his next command.
He is going to fill out and most likely top 80 pounds when fully grown. He is an absolutely stunning dog with unique facial coloring. He is a strong boy who needs someone who will continue to train him, as he will push his limits to see where the boundaries truly lie. He looks to his handler to know what may be expected of him and he listens well. He does have a very slight allergy (eyes a little goopy) to his previous food (Purina One) and so we have switched him to Blue Buffalo and he is doing great. This type of food costs about $50 dollars a 35 pound bag. He should most likely stay away from Chicken/grain food...the foods without these ingredients cost about that much and Blue Buffalo is a great brand!
Ares plays with our GSD like an old friend, shares toys (they play tug of war with a small Kong bone without a sound) shares walks, shares water. He does not share food, but we do not keep food readily available...they both know when it is time to eat and act accordingly. He barks at strange dogs passing by or in Petsmart, but again, with training and socialization I believe this will not be an issue. I do not believe he will pair well with small dogs, and though he has lived with cats, he most likely grew up with them and due to his aggressive barking at the cats in the cages at Petsmart, would not recommend a household with cats either.
