Adopting a dog or a cat is a serious, long term commitment for the life of the pet. The Bahamas Humane Society strongly encourages anyone thinking about adding a pet to their family to do the necessary research and be prepared for this commitment.
You will first be required to complete our Adoption Application either on-line or bring it to the shelter. Once the application is received, it will be reviewed by BHS management/volunteers. A staff member or volunteer with the Bahamas Humane Society will contact you within three days either by phone or email for an interview and to answer any questions that you may have about the process. If you have a pet(s) currently or in the past a veterinarian reference is required to verify that the pets are current on vaccinations and preventative care, are in good health and are spayed/neutered. To help the process move forward we ask that you contact your references to inform them that you have listed them as a reference. If you are renting the property that is listed on the application, we require proof that you are allowed to have a pet as well as any breed or size restrictions that may exist. The final step is a home visit. One of our staff or volunteer(s) will schedule to visit your home with preferably all family members present. We will want to see your new pet's prospective living arrangement, and walk your fence line, and see what shade/shelter will be provided if the dog will be in Freeport, and primarily outdoors. We do not adopt dogs out abroad to be primarily outdoor dogs. Please note our dogs may not be chained, tethered, or caged (other than for crate training purposes), and we prefer our cats to be strictly indoor cats. We want only to verify your home is a safe and loving place for one of our pets. Upon approval of application and home visit the BHS will work with the applicant and family to find the right match for your family and lifestyle.
To be considered for adopting one of our pets, please complete our Adoption Application. We know there are a lot of questions, but please understand our goal is to find lasting committed homes for all our dogs and cats, and to help adopters make the best possible match!
The adoption fee for adopting a dog from BHS is $75 and the fee for a cat is $50. This is set to allow us to cover some of our expenses as well as to help other animals in our care. Our fee includes vaccinations/deworming and any other medical needed, and also includes spay/neuter.
